Sustainability

Living and learning for sustainability: from what we eat, to how we manage waste. From our buildings and furnishings to our energy use. Your giving and collaboration will enable Green School to support and expand our environmental projects both on campus, Indonesia and beyond and stay true to our mission as a community of learners making our world sustainable.

The event is a showcase of sustainable solutions offered by students, NGO’s and companies  – from low-tech to high-tech, local to global. Hundreds of people from all corners of the globe come together to enjoy a day of exhibitions, music, food and joy. Support or collaborate with us on this popular event, to create international connections and solve problems collectively.

Renewable Energy

Solar Energy & Micro Hydro Power

A solar panel array provides about one-third of the energy needs of the Green School campus. Supplementing this is the Green School Vortex. Many challenges have come our way in trying to get this micro-hydro system working reliably and we have persisted throughout. With support, we can get this running more efficiently and along with our supporters, can become a showcase of a sustainable campus and the only school in the world to be powered by micro-hydro.

Compost Toilets

The Green School dry pit toilets have served the community well for many years. But Green School students are ready to lead a project to research and develop a better solution. With access to the world’s most beautiful and innovative bamboo architects, students have a vision for an architecturally beautiful and sustainably made structure, employing the latest eco toilet technology. This project has the ambitious goal of being the most beautiful, sustainable and eco-friendly toilet system in the world.

In 2012, Green School was named the “Greenest School on Earth” by the Center for Green Schools Award.

Waste Management
Bio Fuel

A student-run social enterprise, the BioBus program is ground-breaking in Bali and beyond. The school bus fleet runs on used cooking oil and students are involved in managing every aspect of the enterprise. This started as a student initiative and has become a powerful example to other schools and communities of sustainable transport solutions and the potential of children as entrepreneurial problem-solvers.

Bye Bye Plastic Bags

With millions of visitors flooding the island of Bali each year, Bali produces 680 cubic meters of plastic garbage everyday. The Bye Bye Plastic Bags initiative is a youth movement led by two young Green School students. Inspired by their teacher, Isabel and Melati are leading a youth movement to rid Bali of single use plastic bags. They are showing the world that children do not need to wait to be grown up to be the change the world needs. Be a part of this rapidly-growing initiative and help Make Our World Sustainable.

KemBali Recycling Facility

Established as a social enterprise within Green School, KemBali provides a waste management service to the school community and neighboring villages. As an example of the power of collective community effort, this initiative crosses cultures and generations and is tackling head-on one of Bali’s biggest environmental challenges.  Students and the local community are all involved in the running of the enterprise and they are ready to expand its services further afield, providing a much-needed waste management service to more communities in Bali. Other projects in the pipeline include a precious plastic workshop, fashion up-cycle classes and paper making.
